CE Certified - EN ISO 20345

safety shoe
The full name of the EN ISO 20345 specification is EN ISO 20345:2011 Personal Protective Equipment – Safety Footwear which is the standard all styles of “safety footwear” are tested against. It was formerly referred to as EN345, but this was replaced by EN ISO 20345:2004. EN ISO 20345:2007 was the next revision, followed by EN ISO 20345:2011, which is the current version of this standard. This will be superseded by ISO/WD 20345 in due course. Currently, it is still in development.

The EN ISO 20345:2011 standard sets more stringent minimum requirements than previous versions. It specifies that ALL safety footwear must have toe protection, and sets a standard of 200-joules impact-resistance (equivalent to a 20kg weight dropped 1,020mm onto the toes) and a 15KN compression test (equivalent to 1.5 tonnes resting on the toe area).

All safety footwear manufactured after the 31st July 2013 must meet this standard. However, this doesn’t mean that footwear made before that date is now of no use, only that those produced after this date will need to meet the new stricter standard.

Often referred to as steel toe cap boots or rigger boots, safety boot and safety shoe come in a variety of styles and fittings depending on your requirements and what the needs are within your role. If you’re someone that does a lot of work outdoors on a construction site for example, a pair of safety boots with a solid, substantial sole is probably the wisest option as they will provide you with the best protection against the elements as well as any hazards. On the flip side, a pair of safety boots may not be needed if you work in a kitchen, here safety shoes with a slip-resistant sole are likely to serve you better.

Not only have safety boots served a practical purpose, but they have also had their moments in fashion too, particularly in the skinhead and punk subcultures where an industrial/military look is the one to go for.

Here we’re going to take a look at what makes a safety shoe and why, as well as the different types available and what you should look out for when buying safety footwear.
